Jimmy Sheckard beat out Honus Wagner and Nap Lajoie for MVP honors |
The inaugural season of the Old Time Baseball League was a real crackerjack affair (as I think they may have said back in 1901!). The Detroit Tigers dominated, running up a record of 89-65 to take the American League Crown and the World Series Championship. The Pittsburgh Pirates took the American League with a 79-75 record.
Some stellar individual performances highlighted the season..
-Nap Lajoie (DET).won the Batting Average Title with a hefty .384
-Christy Mathewson (SLN) led the league in wins (with 24) and K's (238)
-Cy Young (PIN) takes the ERA crown with a 2.26 ERA
-Fielder Jones (BOS) amassed 89 steals
"Curveless Al" Orth won the Cy Young Award, apparently not even needing the curve ball |
